Profile I am a fiction professor at the Sarah Lawrence College and Brooklyn College MFA programs, two of the top in the country, and have been working with writers independently for over fifteen years. I am available for fiction editing, novel editing, memoir editing, short story editing, translation from Spanish, editing in Spanish and ghostwriting. I have written three novels and translated four books. My editing jobs include a close look at all the elements of craft, with copious notes on the manuscript itself, as well as an extensive written critique for each individual project. Among the elements covered in this critique are the use of voice, the descriptive and the reflective, helping you create a balance between the external world of your story and the internal world of your characters; external characterization, or the description of action and the physical qualities of each individual character; dialogue and the conversation that often takes place inside the narrative; background and a story's history, that is, what happened before the story begins that is essential to understanding the story; subtext, or as Henry James put it, "the beautifully unsaid"; perspective and point of view; and time and place. Each of these elements is addressed on its own terms as well in relation to each other. Each critique will seek to highlight problem areas for the writer to address in revision. Along with this, each job includes an extensive copyedit, adjusting syntax and diction to best serve the aims of the story.
